Speaker: Professor John Porter, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Professor John Porter is Professor of International Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Mediciine (LSHTM). He trained in medicine (paediatrics) in London and in public health and infectious disease epidemiology in the United States at the Harvard School of Public Health and at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His early research in Africa and India focused on the control of TB, HIV and Leprosy and this work introduced him to the important perspectives of health systems and policy research (HPSR). His primary expertise is in health policy, public health ethics and human rights, and he has worked on collaborations in different settings in India for the past 25 years.

Professor Porter is currently the chair of the Research Ethics Committee at LSHTM, where he has led teaching on ethics, public health and human rights since 1995. He has been involved in research capacity building of several Indian researchers through the Wellcome Trust/Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) Initiative since 2010.
