Dr. Sam Pitroda, Chairman – Board of Trustees.

Dr. Sam Pitroda is an internationally respected telecom inventor, entrepreneur, development thinker, and policy maker who has spent 49 years in information and communications technology (ICT) and related global and national developments.

Credited with having laid the foundation for India’s telecommunications and technology revolution of the 1980s, Dr. Pitroda has been a leading campaigner to help bridge the global digital divide. During his tenure as Advisor to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Dr. Pitroda led six technology missions related to telecommunications, water, literacy, immunization, dairy production, and oil seeds. He was also the founder and first Chairman of India’s Telecom Commission. In these plural roles, Dr. Pitroda helped revolutionize India’s development philosophies and policies with a focus on access to technology as the key to social change.

In addition, Dr. Pitroda holds over 15 honorary PhD’s, close to 100 worldwide patents, and has published and lectured widely in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Mr. R Jayachandran, Treasurer.

Mr. R Jayachandran is the Chairman of Aquarius Investments Pte. Ltd. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from the University of Madras, and is a Chartered Accountant. He has attended the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard Business School. Jaya is Singapore’s High Commissioner for Mauritius.

He has a wealth of hands on experience in building businesses, corporate governance, handling employee relationships, key India and other external relationships.


Mr. A V Balasubramanian, Member.

Mr. A V Balasubramanian is the Director of Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems (CIKS). His basic training is in the area of chemistry with specialization in bio-chemistry and bio-physics. Since 1982, he has been involved and interested in understanding, exploring and developing the current relevance and applications of traditional Indian Science and technology.

Traditional healthcare systems is his special area of interest. He is involved in a number of organisations working for the revitalisation of traditional Indian sciences and Technologies, such as Patriotic and People oriented Science and Technology foundation, LSPSS, Foundation for Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions, etc.

He has been involved in research and has written on varied areas of traditional knowledge including Yoga, Ayurveda, Tradional Irrigation, Indigenous Metallurgy and the Nature and Organisation of Traditional Indian Knowledge Systems, particularly the methodology of science.

Dr. K R S Murthy, Member.

Dr. K R S Murthy is the Chairman, Board of Governors at Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), and former Director of Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB). Dr. Murthy has been active in management education for nearly three decades.

He initiated electives in public enterprise management in the post graduate programme. He has taught in the Post Graduate, Executive Development, Doctoral and Faculty Development Programmes in IIMA, besides heading academic administrative positions such as the Fellow Programme in Management and Editor, Vikalpa. He was the first director of the Institute of Rural Management Anand.

He has been actively involved, as a member of the Governing Council, in several educational and non-profit institutions, such as the Indian Institute of Capital Markets, Vashi, National Institute of Securities Markets, Mumbai, Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode, Amrita University, Coimbatore, TAPMI, Manipal, the Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions, Bangalore, and the Public Affairs Centre, Bangalore.


Mr. D K Ved, Trustee.

Mr. D K Ved is Ex-Director, Ex-officio Advisor and currently Emeritus Professor in the School of Health Sciences at The Institute of TransDisciplinary Health Sciences and Technology.

Padmashree Darshan Shankar, Managing Trustee.

Padmashree Darshan Shankar is the managing trustee of Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions (FRLHT), Bangalore, and Former Advisor to Member (Health) of the Planning Commission.

He is currently the Vice Chancellor of the TransDisciplinary University (TDU), Bangalore.


Professor Kamaljit Bawa, Member.

Professor Kamaljit Bawa is currently Distinguished Professor of Biology at the University of Massachusetts (UMASS), Boston; and President, Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bangalore, India.

He is interested in biodiversity and global change. The overarching theme of his work is to improve understanding of the impacts of land use and land cover change, climate change and human use of natural resources on biodiversity. In particular, he interest lies in developing new approaches to conservation that take explicit account of the need to build institutions and alleviation of poverty
