Master of Science (Life Science) – Ayurveda Biology by Research

Program Overview

Forging bridges between different disciplines is the path-breaking trend in innovation. A transdisciplinary approach, exploring epistemological bridging of traditional medicines (TM) with modern biomedicine could be the paradigm shift in global healthcare sector that fulfils the contemporary healthcare demands. Ayurveda, the system of medicine originated in India, can play a pivotal role in this transdisciplinary knowledge synthesis. The M.Sc. Life Sciences (by research) program, Ayurveda Biology, at the University of TransDisciplinary Health Sciences & Technology (TDU) intends to create the knowledge interface between Ayurveda and life sciences. The scope of the post-graduate program in Ayurveda Biology is to bridge SHASTRA and SCIENCE to interpret the sophisticated, systemic theoretical foundations, principles and practices of Ayurveda using modern scientific tools. The program theme is ideal for students who are interested in taking up challenging transdisciplinary research in Ayurveda and biology. Students trained through this program will have job opportunities in the academic/research sector as well as in Ayurvedic, nutra- and pharmaceutical industries.

Broad Outcomes of the Program

The broad outcomes of the program shall be;

  • to create a knowledge interface between Ayurveda and modern life sciences;
  • to integrate theoretical and practical aspects of life sciences and technology with Ayurveda for applications in the contemporary healthcare research and industry needs;
  • to train students in basics of Shastra and Science for logical synthesis and application of knowledge systems of Ayurveda and Biology.
  • to build skill and capacity in students to take up industry/academic based research jobs in the area of Life Sciences/Biomedicine/Ayurveda.

Who is the program designed for?

The course is designed for students who are interested in taking up challenging transdisciplinary research in Ayurveda and modern biomedicine. The students trained through this program will have job opportunities in the academic/research sector as well as in Ayurveda, nutra- and pharmaceutical industries.


Students with a Bachelor’s degree in diverse backgrounds including in any branch of Life Sciences / Biology / Pharmacy / Engineering (with biology) / Indian Systems of Medicine / Biomedicine.

Fellowships for Meritorious Students

A small number of scholarships of Rs 10,000 pm are available for those selected through a competitive process.

Career opportunities

Students may acquire knowledge and skills suitable for a wide range of applications and careers in research centres, industry, government organisations and NGOs. The course will help students who want to engage in PhD/ research in Ayurveda, Biology and other domains of life sciences.

Duration and credits of the course

The minimum duration of MSc (Life Science) Ayurveda Biology is 2 years. This is a 75 credit program with 25 credits for course-work and 50 credits for project work (guided by mentors).

  • Concepts of network pharmacology

Proprietary Databases of Indian Medicinal Plants and their Properties, Data Science, Informatics , Computer Lab, National Herbarium of Medicinal Plants of India, Raw Drug Repository, Ethno-Medicinal Garden with more than 1500 native medicinal plants, Nursery.

Selection will competitive and based on:

  • Academic credentials and courses taken during Bachelors
  • A Statement of Purpose spelling out the motivation for wanting to enroll in this programme.
  • Two reference letters from faculty working in college/research institute who know you reasonably well.
  • Personal interview
