Dr. Padma Venkat

Dr. Padma Venkat is a professor at the TransDisciplinary University and advisor to the School of Life Sciences. Among her achievements are establishing the R&D Facility at TDU and getting ISO accreditation for it. She has also helped the lab obtain AYUSH accredition as a testing facility for traditional medicine. She has conceptualized developed and guided the thematic areas and directions for trans-disciplinary research at the facility. She is a PhD guide of Manipal University and SASTRA University. Two of her students have obtained a PhD and 3 others are in different stages of completion. She has developed more than 25 wellness products and functional foods based on the concept of Rasayana.

Some of her other achievements by areas of her research are:

  1. Rasayana Concepts and Application:
    • Obtained DST funding to establish National Facility for R&D in Rasayana drugs
    • Established appropriate scientific facility and bioassay models to study concepts and functions of Rasayana including Agnivardhaka, Srotoshodhana, Dhatuposhana, Vyasthapana
  2. Reverse Pharmacognosy: Pioneered systematic research approach into the use of traditional knowledge for scientific quality standardisation of medicinal plants
  3. Dravyaguna: Ayurvedic parameters that determine the properties of materials or drugs. Study of rasapanchaka, in particular the role of Rasa (taste)
  4. DNA Molecular Markers: Pioneered R&D to develop DNA based molecular markers for Indian medicinal plants
  5. Concept of Abhava Pratinidhi Dravya:Pioneered research into the Ayurvedic concept of Abhava Pratinidhi Dravya to develop legitimate substitutes for medicinal plants and also understand the Ayurvedic logic behind identification of new functionally similar plants for unavailable or endangered species
  6. Affordable Healthcare Solutions:
    • R&D into concepts and applications of traditional medicine to develop affordable healthcare solutions for the masses
    • Development and testing of a low-cost, point of use copper device for microbial purification of drinking water. This has field tested in communities in Indian and Kenyan households
    • Exploring the application of Rasayana concept for prevention and management of diseases. E.g., iron deficiency anemia

She is keen to engage with PhD students, young people and experts who are interested in designing and executing innovative educational and outreach programs related to

  1. Affordable healthcare- scientifically validated, low-cost solutions for safe drinking water
  2. Rasayana based wellness products- iron deficiency anemia, digestive health, anti-obesity
  3. Developing scientific methods to understand Rasapanchaka
  4. Search for alternative species for endangered species
  5. Scientific understanding of the Rasayana actions-at clinical to molecular levels

Dr. Hosahalli S Subramanya

Dr. Hosahalli S Subramanya is a Professor with the School of Life Sciences at TDU. He holds a PhD in Structural Biology from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from Oxford University, UK. He brings with him over 25 years of research experience and over 17 years of experience in Drug Discovery, having held the positions of Assistant Director at the Central Drug Research Institute, India and Senior Vice President, Lead Generation and Structural Biology, Aurigene. He has an excellent networking and understanding of pharma business landscape and holds more than 40 research publications and international patents in his name. Dr. Subramanya is the mentor for all clinical and pre-clinical research programs across all the schools of TDU.

Dr. Ashwini Godbole
Senior Assistant Professor.

A Senior Assistant Professor with the School of Life Sciences, Dr. Ashwini Godbole’s area of research is centered around Ayurvedic Nootropics (Medhyarasayana) and Neurodegeneration & Ayurveda. She is the recipient of multiple fellowships such as The Darshan Shankar Endowment Fund Fellowship, The Department of Biotechnology Post-Doctoral Fellowship and one from Company of Biologist, Cambridge UK and Sarojini Damodaran International Fellowship. She is also the recipient of DST-SERB Start-up Research Grant.

She is interested to engage with PhD students, young people interested in designing and executing innovative research programs related to

  • Study of mode of action of nootropic drugs (Medhyarasayana) from Ayurveda as cognitive enhancers
  • Explore use of Ayurvedic nootropic drugs as preventive and complementary treatment for neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons’s disease

Dr. Vijayalakshmi Babu
Young Investigator.

A Young Investigator with the School of Life Sciences, Dr. Vijayalakshmi Babu has contributed to the development of nanosized functional bile acid dendrimers as supramolecular hosts, light harvesters and drug carriers. She has published in peer reviewed international publications (impact factor 4.6-7.6) and has given presentations in international conferences. She is the recipient of DST-SERB Young Scientist Award (2015).

She is interested to engage with PhD students, young people interested in designing and executing innovative educational and outreach programs related to

  • Scientific evaluation of traditional drug-dosage forms and metal based preparations used in traditional medicine
  • Natural drug carriers/adjuvants (Anupana) in Ayurvedic pharmaceutics
  • Efficient and cost effective drug delivery systems
  • Nanomedicine and targeted therapeutics

Dr. Vishnuprasad C N
Assistant Professor.

An Assistant Professor at the School of Life Sciences, Dr. C N Vishnuprasad is the recipient of the DST-SERB Fast Track Young Scientist Award (2014) and the C.V. Jacob Award for the best original paper presented at 4th Annual conference of Society for Biotechnologists (India). His paper was also awarded the best paper award, ICBH’13 conducted at SASTRA University, Tanjavur, Tamil Nadu. He has more than 9 years of teaching experience as Lecturer/Assistant Professor/International Research Professor at University level.
